  1. I saw a weird comment that said Americans don’t know that the Iran war was going on. Well maybe it was just the people who immigrated to the US from his family. So here’s the reactions so far from what I can parse.

    US Right wing:

Generally quite supportive of the war as Trump did it. I read my local paper; the 3 editorial sections all talked about the war. 2 of them were hard core MAGA fanatics from what I’ve read over the past decade. They both supported it. The third one was a paleo conservative (isolationist, anti free trade and very culturally conservative part of the right) ex congressman . He won’t condemn Trump, but it’s clear he isn’t exactly gungho either. He just hopes the war will be short.

One poll I saw indicated that 77% of Republicans support Trump’s actions, but Republicans who don’t identify as MAGA supported it by a lesser margin 54%-36%. So most of the right supports it, but the less loyal, probably younger (more young Republicans actually view Israel negatively than positively), ones who don’t feel as attached to Trump or Israel are not happy with it.

    US left/center/everyone else:

Pretty much universal condemnation from the Democrats at 89% disapproval. Everyone else who didn’t identify with a major party are at 58% disapproval. One of my lefty friends is just depressed by this and everything Trump has done.

For everyone who isn’t a Republican, the more left you go the less the approval is for the war. The general attitude is disapproval.

    Israel:

Universal support for the war. I’ve seen figures of like 82% approval for the war with 93% of Israeli Jews supporting it. Only 25% of Arabs like it though.

    Iran:

The diaspora seems to support the war for the most part, but a number doesn’t like the bloodshed from what I’ve heard. As for the people in Iran no one will ever know. I suspect the pro government supporters will defend the Islamic republic to the end. Some opposition people were cheering the attacks when Khamenei died, but how many and how they feel now is opaque. They’re probably too divided to pose a threat to the government anyways. There’s likely a solid number of pro government supporters among the rural population.

  2. A rare case was in the news today: two German hikers had to be rescued from the Baltic sea, as they had pitched their tent on the ice, and the ice had broken during the night. They lost most of their gear, managed to call for help, and were spotted thanks to having built an ‘SOS’ sign from blocks of ice. Rescue crews from both Finland and Sweden scanned the area and finall found them. [Link to article](https://www.hs.fi/suomi/art-2000011880569.html) with an aerial image.

Someone mentioned in the comments that officials in the area have warned about very unstable ice conditions for the past two weeks, so this sounds like a case where the hikers either failed to listen to warnings, or didn’t take them seriously.

  3. I remember making a periscope in school when I was a child. I don’t know what happened to it, but I haven’t used a periscope in a long time. Two decades, probably. I really want to get a periscope.

Lewis Hamilton got his first podium at Ferrari this morning in Shanghai, and the way Ferrari drivers so often say “forza Ferrari” when they’re giving out interviews after a good result makes it sound like they’re religious or political extremists. It’s like “heil Hitler” or “death to Israel” or something. “Yeah, grazie tutti to everybody here trackside and back in Maranello, it was a great weekend and we will work hard between races to get even better next time, forza Ferrari!”
