My husband spent over a year applying to skilled trade union apprenticeships which have become increasingly competitive but finally landed one last May. We moved a few hours north for this opportunity. About a month after we settled in, he got a call/offer from a different union that has a significantly higher top-out pay than the one he joined. Since we had just moved away from that area, he declined it.
Well he’s been laid off for over a month now, and while it is extremely stressful, I am chalking it up to typical winter lull and trying to remain optimistic. This week he is in school and got to talking with one of his classmates who apparently knows the training director at the union he turned down. Long story short now he’s toying with the idea of transferring there. However neither of us want to move. So we’re talking 2 hour commute there and 2-3 hour commute home. They also structure their schooling as such that he would have class 2 nights a week after work, so he would plan to stay at his mom’s for the night twice a week.
I cannot fathom having a quasi-long distance marriage for a 5 year long apprenticeship. He keeps saying it’s for the greater good financially and that he “understands it would be hard” but I really don’t think he realizes the toll it would take on me. He keeps seeking reassurance from me that I’d stick by him if he did this but I have made it very clear that I don’t want this to happen. Any advice is appreciated.
