In foreign language classes, did you get your own name in that language?

There was a post yesterday on AITA about this subject, and one of the top comments said that everyone they knew had to pick their own name when they took a language class, in that language.

Now I’m curious how widespread this concept actually was/is!

I took one year of French in middle school, where I did have to pick a French name, then I did German for a year in middle school and all of high school, but I was never assigned to pick a German name.
