I’m Afghan but I grew up in a San Francisco suburb. My skin is pretty light just like my parents, though I have brown hair and eyes. Sometimes I’ll come across anti-racist activism and they’ll mention the lived experience of being a person of color. In my experience I mostly made friends with white and asian kids. I watched tv and played video games and never felt like the white characters in them didn’t represent me. In school, I’ve had people call me whiteboy, or tell me that I’m “white as fuck” for liking rock or electronic music. I even had some weird looks towards me during a class on slavery.

It’s a bit weird now that in applying for jobs, I’ve had people question me about putting my race down as white or ask me where I’m from.
