I [32F] am currently at a loss and feel like I’m being gaslit. A few nights ago, I woke up at 3:00 AM to use the bathroom and realized my boyfriend and his friend were already in there talking. I stayed quiet and overheard a conversation that broke my heart. My boyfriend was telling his friend that his uncle had recently punched him in the face because he found out my boyfriend hooked up with another woman. According to what I heard, the uncle had warned him not to do it, and when he found out my boyfriend ignored him, things got physical.

When I finally knocked on the door, the room went dead silent. When he opened the door, I pretended I hadn't heard anything, but I saw his phone on the counter. Once they left the room, I locked myself in, got his uncle's number, and called him immediately. The uncle didn’t even try to deny it. He sounded genuinely sorry, apologized to me, and confirmed that he had told his nephew not to cheat and ended up hitting him because of it.
Now, my boyfriend and his friend are totally changing the story. They are both insisting that he never actually cheated and that he only made up the entire story to "seem cool" in front of his buddy. His friend is backing him up, saying they were just talking nonsense. I don't understand why his uncle would apologize for a situation that "didn't happen." I feel like they are all covering for him now that I know the truth. Is it even possible he’s telling the truth, or am I being lied to?

TL;DR: I overheard my BF tell a friend his uncle punched him for cheating. The uncle confirmed this to me over the phone, but now my BF and his friend claim the whole story was a lie just to make him look "cool."
