its Sunday, the landlord is either in the house next door drilling or he's got workers in there. its already been going on for 2 weeks right up to Christmas eve but he was back boxing day and I'm really getting sick of it now. It started at like 9.30 this morning. The one day I could have slept in due to work etc. Is this ridiculously inconsiderate like I feel it is or am I just a massive Karen.

  1. For noisy construction/building work in the UK, it’s generally not permitted on Sundays or bank holidays,

  2. You could knock and ask how long it’s going to last for. If they’re doing refurbishment, it could be a while. 9:30 is a little early, so you could also politely ask he starts later.

  3. I am doing a full renovation on my house atm, and the laws say no noisy work outside these hours:

    M-F: 7.30/8am-6pm
    Sat: 7.30/8am-1pm
    Sun: Shut up
    Bank holidays: Shut up

You’re not being a Karen, that landlord is being a knob.

ETA: Specifics will be set by your local council ofc, so it’s worth checking first, but generally speaking it’s all much of a muchness.

  4. It’s frustrating that it’s ongoing, but I really don’t think you can complain about it starting at 9.30am. That’s definitely reasonably late in a morning to start, I think anything after 8am is fair game. Everyone has different work/sleep schedules etc, but generally 8am is considered normal for starting noisy work. Officially 7am is the time that the UK says you can start noisy building work.

  5. Dob him into your local council’s noise line with evidence on every occasion out of hours. He is taking the piss.

  6. If my landlord does work he starts at 8/8.30 😭😭

Unfortunately I’d say – I agree it’s inconsiderate but I think you would be perceived as a Karen for complaining. It’s frustrating but if they need to do work, then there’s nothing stopping them :/
It’s shit for you that it’s this early over Christmas, but one of those “tough shit” things sorry

  7. Before Reddit… people would just pop round and have a word… bet the bloke didn’t want to start at half 9 either 😅😂.

  8. I personally wouldn’t start noisy DIY until about 10 on a weekend but I don’t think 9:30 is especially early really, even if it is a Sunday.

If it is bothering you then pop round and explain and ask if they can start a little later. You might also then get an idea of how much more work there is to do.
