This awkward encounter has been bothering me for way too long and I feel like I cant get past it till I talk about it. It wasn't a big deal but I also wanted to melt into the wall when it happened. A coworker brought in tamales to share. Everyone gathered around and was getting really excited and grabbing one. I walked up and asked "what exactly is a tamale? I've never got to have one before." To which she kind of hovered her hand between them and me, stopped smiling, and said "you probably won't like them since youre a picky eater." I am not a picky eater. I dont know where she pulled this conclusion from. I kind of just said oh ok and faded out of the crowd but wtf. I was excited to try something new and I just asked what all was in it. I didnt ask in a snide or judgemental way. I was just curious. Im 5'5" and a size 18. I dont understand why this happened. All I can think is she didnt want to share with the fat person. Idk. Did I react wrong? Was it rude to ask what a tamale was? We have a pretty neutral relationship at work. Idk. Im just trying to figure it out. Happy to fill in any story holes.
