How to tell a friend you’re going on a trip but they’re not invited? No malice, just wanted to keep the group small three to four people max. I just don’t want them to feel left out but also feel like I should let them know in person, instead of finding out through socials.
I’m afraid I will just be blunt or say something that could be misconstrued.

Don’t talk about trip in front of them. Don’t post your life on social media. Easy-peasy
If he invites himself and doesn’t take a hint, you can say “sadly, there are some personal stuff me and my friends might talk about and prefer to keep to ourselves”.
Of course they will feel left out. You’ve ranked them lower on your priority list.
Restrain yourself and don’t post on social media. And don’t talk about the trip in social settings.
