Hi everyone,

I’m Dutch and I’ll soon be having a final interview with a British HR Director for a role in an international company. I’m well-prepared on the content side, but I’m curious about the British side of things.

In the Netherlands we tend to be very direct, very to-the-point, and sometimes a bit too blunt without realising it. I definitely don’t want to accidentally come across as rude, overly direct, or like I’m speed-running the conversation.

So for those of you who work in hiring or leadership in the UK: how should I approach the communication style? What do British directors appreciate in interviews, and what are the things a Dutch person should tone down, soften, or adjust? And is the level of formality usually higher than what we’re used to here?

Any advice or examples would be really appreciated. I just want to make sure I strike the right balance between being myself and respecting the British style of interviewing.

Thanks in advance! 🇬🇧🇳🇱
