EDIT – thank you so much for your responses – that is quite a range we have here haha I guess we’ll check it more often so we can gauge how much we’re using!

Hi there,

If you have an oil boiler, how long would 500 litres last you?

We moved into a house with an oil boiler 3 weeks ago, we’ve had the house since last year but were doing renovations. We topped up with 500 litres in June and it’s gone already.

We had been using it sparingly for hot water and a bit of heating on the odd occasion in the evenings but we’ve only been using it every day for the past 3 weeks.

The boiler is over 20 years old and we had it serviced in June before we put the oil in but a few weeks ago (we moved in then had to move back out the next day) the boiler had gone – apparently it just needed clearing out.

I’m wondering if it’s normal to use this amount of oil in so little time or if there’s likely a leak somewhere considering the age?

Our boiler repair guy said people go through 1000 litres in 6 months but I just find that hard to believe.

Side note – I am currently on mat leave so am home all day with the baby but the heating is off for 8-12 hours in a 24 hour period and the water is used for washing up and showering about 6 times a day
