I keep hearing Americans saying a fourth instead of a quarter – is this normal there? I can sort see the logic if you're mixing your fractions in with your ordinal numbers, but to me it sounds as wrong as saying a threeth instead of a third, or a twoth or a second instead of a half.
If I'd read 3/4 as three fourths at school, I'd have been corrected and most likely laughed at.
