Today I’m heading to the west coast of Sicily, but unfortunately for work, not for leisure!
I’ll take the chance to go to a good place for lunch there, that specialises in fish couscous. That’s the most famous dish from that side of the island.
The first snowcover of the season came down during the night. It sure is pretty: it’s the way in which every tree branch has a sprinkling of snow that makes some snow conditions super beautiful.
But here I am, with summer tires in my car… It pains me to even think about the process of changing them: 20 bolts that are 100% over-torqued by the tire shop, meaning I’ll have to use a long extension on the wrench to get things going, and then the slightly messed-up threads on every single one of those bolts fighting every step of the way. I think I’ll have to use some strategy such as listening to a favourite podcast or something to help with the process.
After a day or two of gorgeous weather, the blegh weather is here 😵💫 but okay. Husband asked for Japanese breakfast, so we’re having rice, natto, soup and tamagoyaki. It fits the weather.
Yesterday I drove somewhere for meat acquisition (I get them from a wildlife sanctuary). This time I also got some lamb from someone else. I didn’t know them, but apparently they’re hobby shepherds who also sell some meat when they slaughter. The man said it’s barely breaking even, let alone making money. I don’t buy conventionally raised meat and it makes me sad that people who farm high welfare animals can barely get the returns of their labor, let alone make a living.
But now my freezer is full of different delicious cuts that I can cook with. And sausage.
Thinking this much about food is a Turkish thing, I think. People like me grow old to become pensioners who take a 1,5 hour bus ride to the other side of the city because they sell the best cheese. I know quite a few of those.
I also noticed while I was driving that the section of highway (I don’t drive there often) has been in a state of construction since two years with very little apparent progress. Imagine driving on a German highway for two hours, and encountering no construction. That would be very uncanny.
I feel old, directionless, and senile. My only dream is to move somewhere where weed is legal. We’re not gonna be invaded anytime soon, and I have food and a roof over my head, all of which I’m thankful for. I dreamed I robbed a gas station and I was going to prison, which would’ve sucked because I have no social skills nor street smarts. Kinda dumb to rob a gas station, this being the case. Woke up relieved that it was just a dream.
Still have to get used how close by things are with a car. Went to Utrecht yesterday. Only 1 hour. With public transport that would have been 2 hours. Seriously regret not getting my license decades earlier. Only downside is parking costs; 40 euro’s for 5 hours. But then, we bought stuff, dumped it in the car, and went back to more shopping. With public transport, we just had to carry all the stuff we bought around all day.
My wife has already decided out first foreign holiday with car should be to England, but that’s not going to happen. I’m an ok sort of driver, but I don’t feel remotely ready to drive on the wrong side of the road. Even with a rented car.
