I've always enjoyed reading (or watching documentaries) about people who accomplished something extraordinary, or lived through events that seem almost unbelievable, yet never became widely known. Ordinary person with an extraordinary story. For example:

  • Juliane Koepcke (Peru/Germany): The only survivor of a 1971 plane crash over the Amazon. She fell 10,000 feet, still strapped to her seat, then walked alone through the rainforest for 10 days to find help.
  • Fredric Baur (USA): The engineer who designed the Pringles can. When he passed away in 2008, his family honored his wish by burying part of his ashes inside one.
  • Wilma Rudolph (USA): Born prematurely and later paralyzed by polio, she was told she would never walk. She went on to win three gold medals in track and field at the 1960 Olympics tthe first American woman to do so.

I’d love to hear about one lesser-known but remarkable person or event from your country 🙂
