I had a re treatment of RCT for a upper molar at NHS hospital after a referral by local dentist and looking for advise on next steps please.
Background
– I had a RCT done at a level 2 practice. Several months after the RCT, I still had pain and hence a crown was not fitted
– Had diagnostics xrays and CBCT which did not show any issues and all dentists mentioned the RCT was done to a good standard. The level 2 suggested referring to Level 3 in hospital for the ongoing pain which was done.
– Had a level 3 assessment at NHS Hospital, by then it was 8 months since RCT. The pain still being there.
– The NHS consultant dentist suggested redoing the RCT. However this was done by a post grad student with them supervising in between. I did not gain confidence in the student doing the treatment. The student was constantly chatting to other students and was interrupted by them. At one point they unnecessarily left the file in the tooth too long while waiting for xray results. The quality of the supervisor was amazing and professional but I felt let down by the student treating.
– I had the old filler removed and tooth cleaned and have been called back after 3 weeks for the actual RCT (filling and sealing)
– Given this is a retreatment, I am wary of this going badly and the lack of experience by a student.
Options:
- Email the NHS hospital about how I felt and ask to be treated by someone senior –> Not sure if that would happen and may put treatment by the same student in jeopardy
- Move to private –> Is this feasible/ recommended when half the treatment is done by NHS
- See the same consultant in private –> Expensive but familiar with care
Anything else? Also keen to hear thoughts from anyone who had RCT done at NHS hospitals by a student.
Thanks
