In the Netherlands, the emergency ambulances are staffed by a highly trained nurse (bachelor level nurse with experience in two or three specific departments and additional training as an ambulance nurse) and a driver who has had some medical training in order to assist the nurse.
When I see ambulances in other countries on tv, they are very often staffed with two paramedics. I always wonder what that means exactly. The term "paramedic" in the Netherlands is very broad and includes several different types of medical workers such as X-ray techs or physiotherapists.
