Rain all night here and still raining this morning… summer has definitely ended in Palermo!
Tomorrow is San Martino,a kind of small feast day here. Not a public holiday but we have some special food on this day.
Do you do anything for St Martin’s Day? Is it a known feast day or just a normal day in your country?
It’s hard to accept that the days will be getting shorter for another six weeks. Thankfully the pace is slowing down already, each day, the time between sunrise and sunset grows less than it did yesterday.
Plus, a super experienced bird watcher gave me some tips on how to enhance learning: he recommended spending time listening to the species we have during winter, to “cast their sounds in concrete”, meaning they’ll be effortless to recognize once spring immigration starts and we’ll get a massive influx of migrating birds once again – in addition, knowing some sounds and songs by heart makes it easier to pay attention to the specialties of ones you’ve heard less of.
Do you guys like short stories?
My husband is an avid sci-fi reader, and it was shocking to me that he hasn’t read any sci-fi anthologies. Short stories are the bread and butter of science fiction. Back in the day, many greats like Isaac Asimov started out with posting short stories to dedicated magazines and short story anthologies are super common. They’re a great way to show a bit of worldbuilding or concept without needing to lay it out for pages and pages, and letting readers contribute with their imagination.
Turns out, my husband hates that 🤣 this morning he was writing to me on the train that he’ll finish the book I gave him and not read another one. The moment he gets invested, the story ends and he has so many questions (which he doesn’t like). I am used to reading short stories in any genre (I mean, Anton Chekhov is one of my favorite authors) so it doesn’t bother me, but to him it seems unbearable.
When I write for daily challenges, for example, I usually aim for 100-500 words per story. They should be self-contained. It is quite challenging, and those usually are harder to find readers for. I guess this is the reason.
Anyhow, any short story writers or anthologies you enjoy?
I really hope this US government shut down comes to an end with the senate bill passing. Air traffic is being affected heavily, and the job market feels even worse with this shit going on. The government scientific databases are still online.
