The bassoon sonata by Camille Saint-Saëns Op. 168 is one of the last works he wrote. During this period he also wrote some other sonatas, like one for the clarinet, in order to give less heard instruments a chance to shine. It also happens to be my absolute favorite piece of music in the whole world. I don’t even know how I came across it, I think it was in a digital archive I got from someone ages ago. It is not frequently played or recorded.
So imagine my squee when I saw a few weeks ago that it was going to be played in the Elbphilharmonie chamber music hall on the 20th. And I mean, I am the only one who likes this piece, so getting tickets would be easy, right? Wrong! In fact, it was almost sold out. I managed to snatch the last ones.
It was so beautiful 😭 I cant even describe. I literally welled up (it’s not sad, just gorgeous. The feelings have to go somewhere). The rest of the program was also 20th century French music. I heard a lot of new stuff, which is always great.
The concert in the main hall was also sold out. Actually most concerts for the coming weeks are sold out. Wasn’t classical music dead? What’s going on.

If you guys are ever in Hamburg, I really really recommend visiting a concert here. It’s the best concert hall I’ve been to, and I’ve been to many of the amazing ones in Europe. And you can ride the never ending curved escalator like [Tom Scott](https://youtu.be/ZgDBIzClmPg?si=m56a-e-XXghzq2na)
Nice story from Sweden, where a football team from a very small town (village?) has just won the Swedish championship.
Mjällby apparently have a very small budget, much less than the traditional big clubs in the country.
Do you remember, some years ago there was this fashion for men to tie colorful sweaters over the shoulders. I remember some of my friends (well, young men I knew) even buying sweaters specifically not to wear them, but to tie them over the shoulders as an accessory.
Yesterday I saw a guy, maybe in his late 50s, wearing a cream-colored suit with a red sweater over the shoulders and it brought back all the memories. Are these in fashion again? It does look a bit silly when paired with a suit, I must say.
Also, I wonder if men wear more colors when they get older. You even see it with soloists, the older ones often wear colorful shirts etc (Albrecht Meyer was wearing a red silk brocade jacket yesterday) but young ones are often in plain concert blacks.

That part in the intro where there’s a strange chord and then you hear a laugh? That was Sting (the singer in the band) who went backwards by mistake and accidentally sat on the piano keyboard,then laughed.
He said that they didn’t think anyone would buy the record so they just left it in…
Did anyone hear about the recent [Louvre jewelry heist?](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg7nrlkg0zxo.amp), the thief stole gems that were owned by Napoleon or something.
It made me think about [Vincenzo Peruggia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincenzo_Peruggia) who stole the Mona Lisa and actually got away with it until he came out and got caught trying to resell it. That was a fun and interesting read.
I’ve never been to the Louvre but hopefully I can go one day, also the thought of all the crowds and stuff.
