Why when a loved one is in the hospital, some families feel the need to act as a they are on vacation? They bring ALL their shit, take over waiting rooms, ask things of staff as if they are the patient, post pics of the patient; selfies even, walk around the floor with no shoes, I could go on forever. Then, everyone has a nurse-relative, their pizza boxes are piling up while they empty the waiting room coffee pot once again, orders extra food on the patient’s meal for themselves, comes out in the hall all day instead of putting on the call light. Who do people think they are? Please, explain it to me. It’s so weird people act like this at a hospital.

  1. BC it is often something people don’t experience often, so it’s a novel thing for most people.

  2. Victims by association? Demanding special treatment because they know someone who legitimately needs special treatment. My mom does this kind of crap.Woe is me, I’m suffering too yadda yadda yadda.

  3. A lot of people prioritize spending as much time as possible with their hospitalized loved one, which means spending a lot of time at the hospital. Some people just take more liberties getting comfortable than others.

  4. Take a deep breath. No one wants to be sick, and no one wants their loved one to be sick or dying. Everyone doesn’t cope with trauma, or concern in the same way. Sometimes they are doing their best. I was taught as a nurse to stay focused on the patient, to never judge, and to find a way to provide care despite everything else. I get to go home to a healthy family, many do not.

  5. Humans do what humans do. They will make themselves at home in places they spend a lot of time at. Some are more comfortable than others doing so. To feel more comforted and relaxed in a situation that is probably taxing on them as well.
