I (35F) have been married to my husband (42M) for 6 years, and have been together for a total of 10 years.
In the 10 years we’ve been together he has not once sat me down or even initiated a conversation about our financial future like retirement and savings account. I have been the one encouraging him to open a retirement account and save money. I have my own through my employer. Without my knowledge he’s now $20,000 in debt. Which he said he would get a second job to pay off. It’s been 10 months since that conversation and he has not gotten a second job. He works for a small business and doesn’t get any medical benefits through them, so I pay for it through my employer.
I love him. He is a great husband, but I worry that love is not enough to protect our future financially. I’m doing my part. I am putting away something every month for our/my retirement. Why can’t he do the same?? Am I asking too much of him? Are finances really that important??
I put whatever I can each month in our savings account. But he doesn’t even contribute $10 to it.
Is this what partnership looks like for most married people?
