I’m Hungarian who is currently living in the UK. As of the writing of this post, I’m in Hungary on a private medical check up as well as general holiday and so far, I’ve had an amazing time catching up with former friends, family, making more friends and traveling around Budapest and my region, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén megye. However, it is extremely hard to avoid politics as everywhere you look, you can feel the damage the Orban regime has caused especially since 2022 ; antagonizing propaganda about basically anyone who isn’t them or the Kremlin, sky high costs, low wages and a general cynical outlook on the current system even in areas which used to be Fidesz strongholds. With the rise of Peter Magyar, I’ve noticed that more and more people are vocally speaking out against Viktor Orban and there is a real chance (imo a 75%) that Orban will finally be ousted.
Peter Magyar’s anti corruption reform, pro EU, pro NATO and “patriotic” promises such as the “Vár a hazád” (Your nation is waiting for you) program has definitely stirred some hopeful emotions inside of me as I always wish my country was better off so I could happily move back and live my life in my beautiful homeland where I can raise my future children.
In conclusion, I’ve noticed that more and more Hungarians are speaking out against Viktor Orban and his kleptocratic, rotten regime and if even a fraction of Peter Magyar’s promises turn out to be true, we will be a lot better off than we are at the moment, therefore, the general outlook towards the future is cynical but definitely on the hopeful side. 🇭🇺🇪🇺
