Nice sunny morning in Valencia,19° at 8.30am.
Last stop of the summer for me before heading home, and a great one…a beautiful city in one of my favourite countries!
My mom is a popular science enthusiast and often sends me articles she reads here and there. I usually have to go dig out the original paper (which is rarely cited :/) and tell her if the article is legit or clickbait. This time, I was positively surprised that [the article about Danish scientists accidentally digging up an old industrial preparation of lactic acid bacteria](https://www.popsci.com/science/old-butter-basement-discovery/) is legit and cool! It didn’t show up in my regular science news feed. Man, people are so lucky. I would be jumping around for a whole day if I found something like this.
Maybe I should leave a packet of yeast or something in the institute basement for microbiologists to discover 130 years from now.
It is cooler now, especially in the mornings, but still nice and sunny.
Man, the tension over immigration here is boiling. Trump imposed a $100k fee on any new H1b (work) visas next year. Quite a lot of drama on reddit over it. The IT sector has gone into a tailspin in the US with low hiring and high layoffs (interest rates have been hiked and some hiring managers are betting heavily on AI). The university system has seen enrollment in CS and related career paths skyrocket over the past decade and a half. I have a feeling many graduates will never find a career in that industry; they are demanding an end to the program. Maybe they should actually pass a law to set up a commission to regulate how many visas they grant, and they can just lower the numbers in recessions and increase the number in booms
Oh, on a related note, the AFD appears to have grabbed 1st place in German election polls at around the 25% support mark.
