Sorry this probably is a very basic question.I started college 2 weeks ago and I'm someone who rarely takes the initiative to talk to people, and all my friends are mostly people in my same flight for ROTC. Including my roommate, they all more just picked me up than me going to them.

Tonight we were playing volleyball, some other guys joined, some girls joined, then this dude on the college team joined.

It was fun, near the end he kinda twisted his ankle. I went and asked if he was okay and he said he was fine. Then, because I like volleyball and wanted to try and talk, I tried to start a conversation.

He mentioned how his highschool didn't get a team until his senior year earlier but he couldn't play because he broke his back.
My highschool never had a team but almost got one Junior year so I started with.

"You okay?"

-"yeah I'm fine"

"You had a team in highschool right?"

-"yeah, I didn't play"

He doesn't even look at me and just walks away
I wasn't using any bad tone, I just walked over, stood a respectful distance away and tried to talk.
And I'm left just like, why? I get maybe he just didn't want to talk but I feel like I came off bad.
Maybe I made him feel bad because he couldn't play?
That was my one real attempt at taking initiative in the past few months and just like last time it just was blown off.

It really feels like my fault and aside from maybe my appearance (I'm ugly af) I feel like I'm doing something wrong to be off putting or weird.
