There seems to be a wild power struggle going on in Turkey’s largest opposition party, the CHP. A court ruling has invalidated the Istanbul provincial branch’s last congress and appointed the former deputy chair of the CHP as its caretaker. He was promptly expelled from the party. I also heard that he’s in former CHP leader and the last CHP presidential candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu’s faction. There’s a similar court case against the current party leadership; the rumor is that Mr. Kilicdaroglu wants to become the caretaker of the national party. They seem quite interested in fighting each other, considering what else is happening.
Another rumor is that the Kurdish party DEM is trying to make a deal with Erdogan, perhaps getting some autonomy for the Kurds in exchange for support. I think the Kurds have had some bad blood with the CHP in the past despite getting closer to them in recent years.
This reminds me of reading about Syrian politics.
I was predicting that Finland would play against France in the next round of Eurobasket as surely Georgia wasn’t going to win. And of course Georgia won against France, unbelievable. France and Serbia were both among the favourites and both got bounced in the round of 16. Now it’s the match of the upsetters, Finland v. Georgia. I just don’t understand why an American state is playing in Eurobasket.
I watched some of the Slovenia-Italy game yesterday and Luka Doncic is just different. Slovenia v. Germany will be must watch, I’ll tell you that. Best team in the tournament versus Doncic. Actually all the matchups in the quarter finals are really nice. Maybe Turkiye-Poland not so much, Turkiye has been playing so good I think they’re very much the favourite. But Greece-Lithuania seems really well matched, they have some size to deal with Antetokounmpo, and Finland-Georgia should be pretty equally matched as well. Maybe we’re a bit of a favourite, but not by much.
My prediction is the quarter finals will be Lithuania versus Turkiye and Germany versus Finland.
Big congratulations to our volleyball girls for being second in the world championship! It was super close, and considering how good Italy has been, it is a tremendous accomplishment. I love our women’s volleyball team.
The rest of Turkey updates are already out before I am done with my Monday morning shenanigans, it seems 😅
The lunar eclipse was so great yesterday. It is super clear here, so I could watch it in different stages. I have seen many before, but it always feels so special. There were many other people outside, too.
