I'm following up on another post I made on this subreddit about making friends in university. I managed to work a little bit on meeting people, but I've been encountering the same problem every time and though it would help if others got the answer for it too.

How to I know when to walk away? I'm talking about a scenario where I either met someone new in class, met an old high school friend (or whatever else). I often engage in small talk with them and then get confused as to whether I should walk with them (especially if they're more than one) or just leave. It felt really weird when it happened more than once and I just followed them while trying to talk so I don't look like I'm just following, then I start noticing that maybe I'm bothering so I randomly detach and leave, sometimes even without saying bye.

Does anyone have any tips or rules that can help with that phase of meeting someone? How do I know if and when I should stay or leave?
