i speak english, he’s visiting from colombia.. neither of us know much of the other’s language so 99% of our conversation was through google translate. i was so nervous that it would be painfully awkward but it was one of the best dates i've ever been on! after a short while it felt natural to translate, and we didn't part ways until 6:30 the next morning- just chatted away all night. what a surprise to learn just how much we have in common :’) neither of us are considering long distance or anything like that but i'm so, so glad i stepped outside of my comfort zone and said yes to the date.
i wanted to make this post and share the story because i tried to find other people's experiences dating without a common language and only saw reasons why it wouldn't work. so if you're traveling, or meeting a traveler, or otherwise faced with the opportunity to go on a google translate date – i'd absolutely recommend giving it a shot 🙂
