I haven't seen any news covering this, but I also don't speak French. In general, how do you view your memorial tombs? Do you take your hats off and such or anything like that?

  1. Most likely a set-up picture to generate anti migrant rage-bait.

But I do know that the Unknown Soldier won’t care.

In Ireland we are respectful, but not particularly deferential to Military Memorials.

  2. Are there any sane people that would cheer for disgracing a memorial that isn’t celebrating anything vile?

As for the question in text – personally I always try to reread a message while standing and wondering (I do not wear hats so I can’t take them off). On special days I also leave grave candles on local memorials of scouts and soldiers that have died during ww2/against bolscheviks. They are marks of memory for a sacrifice made in the name of greater values or to signify a callous fate that they didn’t deserve.

  3. I am German, so there is always a bit of context required regarding military memorials. I’ve visited quite a few from WW1 and WW2 and the resistance during WW2 (and even the Napoleonic wars and modern ones). I approach every one with a base level of respect (like a cemetery), nothing more, nothing less. Doing your duty as military personal is commendable, but by itself not extremely virtuous or anything. We had people who were doing their duty to the letter and that definitely does not make them good people and least of all exemplary.

But there were people that went beyond their duties or expectations and who did the right thing regardless of the reward and in WW2 often against orders and under threat for their own lives. I have a deep respect and admiration for those people, not because of who they were or how they served, but because of what they did.

Regardless I would definitely not do something like this, but the other side of me thinks, that unknown soldier would have really really appreciated an omelette. Those guys were people too, often bloody young and probably with dark black humor.

Probably shouldn’t have done it? Is there anyone who thinks this is a good thing?

You’re preaching to the choir waffle-friend.
