Maintenance, reactions from others, best things, etc

  1. Loved it (buzzcut), easy to deal with, lot of people assuming that I was lesbian

  2. I have a side shave and otherwise long waves/curls. I love the juxtaposition of it (my little niece was obsessed with it, kept repeating ‘here it’s short, here it’s long, here’s it short, etc’). I can sort of hide it when necessary with a middle part, or I can accentuate with a half up/half down do. I look more queer, which I love. I am terrible with upkeep though, if I haven’t redone it in +- 3 months it starts to look weird.

My partner shaves it for me, I think it would be best to do every month but I usually forget. But only takes about 10/15 minutes.

I do not look forward to growing it out though. I think I’d let it grow longer while still hiding it with my other hair, and then cut everything into a short hairstyle so it’s even.

  3. I have a lot of hair, and getting an undercut was amazing – you couldn’t tell unless I tied the rest of my hair up, and I no longer got headaches from having a ponytail. I have grown it out over the last few months, as I’d increased the undercut to everything from the tops of my ears down, and that made me feel like I had too little hair left. Growing it out has been a bit annoying, as the undercut didn’t stay tied/pinned up until month 5 or so, but I’m still getting a smaller undercut put back in next time I get my hair cut.
Maintenance I was lucky in, as my partner owns a shaver you can use on your head and was willing to maintain it for me. It only needed trimming once every couple of months (although I’m a “two haircuts a year” person so keep that in mind). I think my hairdresser offers upkeep for free/a minimal fee though. Good luck if you decide to go for one!

  4. I have very thick hair so I started getting an undercut about ten years ago. I remember walking out of the salon and feeling the air on my neck and absolutely loving it. I no longer sweat as much when I sleep in the summer. I wear my hair half up for work and you can’t tell I have the undercut. It’s funny because if I’m around people who don’t know and put my hair in a bun someone will say “oh I like your haircut” and it takes me a second to realize they didn’t know about my undercut. Sometimes I’ll have my husband trim it in between salon visits but usually I just wait.

  5. I love my undercut. Rocked it as a teen, rocking it again (just not dyed green anymore).

It’s especially great in summer, because my hair is so thick I really need to shave a large part of it to feel comfortable.

    Reactions are overall positive.
My hair is so voluminous I can wear it openly and nobody can see I have an undercut. And when I wear a ponytail, everyone is surprised.

Upkeep is simple, my husband shaved it sometimes and that’s it.

  6. Two years ago I went from long hair (mid back) to full buzzcut. I just woke up one morning and just hated how unwieldy my hair was so I asked my partner to cut it all off. Overall I’m super happy I did, and I don’t regret it. I kept it short for a long time, buzzing it back, playing with different styles, but now I’ve been growing it back consistently for about two years. The buzzcut itself (and subsequent pixie variations) were great. You gain so much time in the shower! In and out in 5min. No more wondering “do I wash my hair now or tomorrow, but then I have gym in the morning or do I use dry shampoo?”. No more hair in the drain.
DIVINE feeling of rain falling on bare scalp. Mostly positive reactions from people.

That said, once I started missing my long hair, growing it back has been an absolute pain. From long pixie to short Bob is just horrible. My hair grows really slowly too so it took longer than it would for most people.
That said, I also stopped all bleaching and dyeing since the last buzzcut, so my hair is a lot healthier and my greys are coming in really nicely.

  7. My friend has (or had) this insane thick, long, curly hair that was always out of control so she decided to just shave it all off. People started asking her if she had cancer. It got too much constantly being asked that that she grew it back out. She really liked being bald so I feel sorry for her that she felt pressured to grow it back out.

  8. So I did the side shave for a few years and loved it. My hair still framed my face, and it looked really nice. When it came time to grow, it all back out. I decided to buzz cut it all. I was worried that as a chubby girl, I’d look like a man or worse. A thumb thumb from spy kids. Thankfully, though, I wound up loving it. It takes confidence to sell the look for sure, but it forced me to consider expressing myself through things like my clothing and makeup instead of my hair. I realized I’d been using hair as a crutch, but I also have thin hair and worried about losing it. I’m glad I did it. The puffball stage of growing it back was awkward, but now I’m happy with it and trying new styles as it grows back in that I’d never have tried before, because I know worst case? I can buzz it again.

  9. Have had sideshaves, both big ones, small ones. Both sides, one side.

    Full buzz.

My own hair is C3 curls, ringlets even. Had it long/short. Everything in between.

    Buzzcut was heaven.

  10. I used to have super short spiky hair when I was a teenager.

I went back in for an undercut as an adult recently and the stylist was like, “Oh my gosh this is so empowering. Are you ready? Are you sure? Oh my gosh you’re so brave. You won’t believe how free this makes you feel. Oh my gosh are you *sure* you’re ready??”” And proceeded to shave that 4-inch strip under my long hair like I was single-handedly empowering all of femininity with that little strip of fuzzy skin.

    Rofl it was fuckin weird.

I look way hotter butch than femme so short hair is my go-to lol I kinda hate waiting for it to grow back when I feel like having it long.

Also, I don’t really care that a lot of people seem to assume i’m a lesbian lol

  11. It was nice, I liked the feeling. It wasn’t too bad to maintain, but I would always get a mm or two more than earlier and that adds up. When I decided to grow it out it looked ridiculous for like 6 months.

  12. I did the side shave for awhile. Was obsessed with touching it. It felt so nice. Upkeep was the down fall. I rather go 3 years without any hair cuts lol

  13. I did half my head. Felt so incredible. I had a lot of fun with it, and felt it suited me. Growing it out isn’t always fun, but that’s true of so many styles

  14. I’ve had shallow undercuts and some pretty deep undercuts. They all feel fuckibg awesome. Bonus – they keep some men away. Woohoo!

  15. I had an undercut, I loved it except for maintenance. It really needed to be done every month to look its best, and after a few moves (+years) I never found a person that I liked to keep it up.

  16. My hair is so thick that i get pain from putting it up. I tried keeping it super short and i hated the way i looked. Now, i have bangs to help ease the tension up front, and an undercut. I also split my hair in half and wear it up in twin buns with colorful scrunchies. I get compliments on the buns all the time. I dont remember anybody ever commenting on my undercut, aside from other women with undercuts telling me it looks great.

The worst part of an undercut is having it grow out. It’s awkward and it holds heat. I’ve had my undercut for a long time. I have to get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks to avoid looking shaggy. Sometimes my husband will cut it at home if i can’t get to the salon.

I go to a high end salon, but my hairdresser only charges me $35 to do my undercut, my bangs, and my split ends.

  17. I buzzed my head occasionally for years and now it’s my default cut! I buzz it at the shortest length I can without outright shaving it. Maintenance is nice, I re-buzz every 2-3 weeks and my wife helps clean up the back of my neck.

Men tend to steer clear from me, and other lesbians are more into me. Mission accomplished. 😎

  18. I have the sides shaved because I have so much hair. It gave me headaches (I was unaware that this is what was causing it) and get sunstroke a lot quicker than others. I absolutely love it! I get mine on grade 3. You can’t tell at all, even if my hairs up unless I style it that way. I’ve only every gotten good reactions as well

  19. I buzzed my head in 2020 and kept it buzzed for about a year. I absolutely loved it and I got a ton of compliments. I’m sure I’ll do it again at some point. The feeling of driving with the windows all the way down and no hair getting messed up or smacking you in the face is unlike any other tbh.

  20. I got a very uneven undercut. I was working on a film set and we had a few hours to kill and it was unbelievably hot and humid and one of the hair and makeup guys offered to shave some of my hair off. I did a triangle undercut and it wasn’t centered at all. Tried to fix it a week later and ended up shaving so much more hair than I wanted. It was the most liberating feeling in the world though, my hair was lighter, and when I tied it up and the breeze hit my neck, pure bliss. Growing it out was fine, it looked a little funny at some point but it wasn’t the worst thing in the world and as long as I had my hair down it wouldn’t even show.

My parents hated it, and some of my friends told me it didn’t suit me at all. I don’t regret it tho. Was fun while it lasted (which isn’t for long bc my hair grows out fast)

  21. I buzzed my hair after wanting to for years. It was exciting to not have any maintenance and I think it looked good on me. I buzzed it twice and then started to let it grow out with trims here and there. Months 4 – 12 of growth was rough for me because I had no idea how to style it. Totally worth the awkward stages though. It was very liberating.

  22. Undercut (pixie) was a ton of maintenance… i loved how it felt but my hair grows quickly so it would quickly look bad, and growing it out was a nightmare. I had to style it daily or it would look crazy after being slept on.

  23. I love my undercut. Been about two years. My hair is about an inch below chin length and thick af. I also have bangs. The undercut keeps me cool for sure.

I don’t put my hair up because of the length. And tbh idk what reactions there have been because I don’t really care to be like “look at my undercut,” I don’t care what other people would think.

  24. I had a sidecut for 8 years – I have naturally thick hair so it lightened my overall hair bulk, and felt like a great expression of my unique personality. I liked that I could choose to flip the longer side over it if I needed to look more “professional”. I feel like it was easy to maintain and gave me an ego boost! Grew it out in 2020 (growing it out takes SO LONG and is not fun) when I wanted a life reset.

  25. i buzzed my head originally like 8 years ago and i can’t stop going back hahahaha. i’d gone to a salon to get bangs and the cut turned out so bad i wound up just shaving it off.

turns out i absolutely love having a buzz. i’ve grown it out a few times and gotten it pretty long but i just keep going back.

summers where i am are ridiculously hot, humid, and swampy. buzzing off my hair makes it so much easier to deal with.

it makes my morning routine SO much easier. i have way more time to do fun makeup looks and grab some breakfast and ease my way into my day. plus, a buzz cut with big statement earrings makes me feel so powerful.

maintenance is easy. once it gets long enough that it can lay weird after i sleep on it, i trim it down. it takes me maybe 10-15 minutes at this point. i try to keep it around 1/4” long.

anyway. i love having a buzz and i think i’m gonna keep it for a long while 😌

  26. Had an undercut. Loved the feel of it and it took a fair bit of weight out of my hair. It dried a lot quicker and needed a lot less product and general maintenance.
Growing it out has a weird in between stage and styling it can be a bit more limited- ie plaits
