Bit of a long story, but here we go. Up until May this year, I had been working in a job that I really enjoyed, but felt like I’d reached the end of the line in terms of development. I moved to a new company which I didn’t really have the same ‘love’ for, but the money was good and there were progression opportunities. One opportunity arose which was moving to a different department within the same company, which I applied for after just a few months.

During the long-winded process of transferring roles within this company, an external role came up which seemed perfect for me. I was very excited and applied and interviewed for this role, whilst waiting to transfer internally. I was eventually given a start date for this new internal role, which is the 26th of this month. However, just yesterday I heard back from the ‘dream role’, and was successful. They want me to start on the 15th September.

Technically, I’m still under my old contract for the initial role I held for the new company, I have a week of annual leave next week before starting with this new external role. But I don’t know what to do? I’m 100% set on this external ‘dream role’ and due to being under probation only need to give a week of notice – do I tell my new manager of this different internal department that I’m happy to start with them, but will only do 3 weeks (26th Aug-15th Sep), or do I go into this new role without saying anything, and then give them a week of notice before starting the dream role?

I’m worried that if I say I’ll only be around for 3 weeks, they won’t want me to start at all, but at the same time, I’d prefer to be open and honest about what my plan is. Also, if I work the last week of August I’ll get a full month of pay, whereas if they tell me there’s no point in starting this new internal role, then I won’t.

I’ve probably overcomplicated the explanation, but I could do with some advice.

Thanks!
