Should I be offended about this coffee shop etiquette?

Visiting from Canada. Went to a coffee shop in Edinburgh and they asked me to wait outside for my to-go coffee. Is that normal or am I ugly? This wouldn’t be typical in Canada so made me sad. Thank you!!!!
