I have seen this situation multiple times: someone gets to the front of the queue at some government site or an airport, but part way through their process they are required to complete a form, or input something on a kiosk somewhere nearby. The clerk tells them to come back to the front of the queue but in the mean time continues to serve other people in the queue.

A lot of the time, the people who are now near the front of the queue get cross if you go immediately to the front. Anything from scowls to a full blown screaming match. Frankly, from what I have seen, trying to explain the situation doesn't get anywhere as they have already become angry+adrenalised from feeling cheated and starting the confrontation.

Then those people will also end up skipping the queue later, and the people after them will get angry and so on.

As an introvert, I would do anything to avoid this kind of confrontation, so I am curious what can one say to pacify the situation? I tend to just rejoin the queue from the start to avoid this sort of fuss, but when I am rejoining a 40 min queue 3 times it feels like a piss take. (Or it might be time sensitive, like at the airport…)
