I've heard of pads, tampons and towels. I've heard of pads with and without wings. I've heard of day pads and night pads. How do you choose?

Try them out and see which ones are more comfortable and less stressful for you to use.
I choose based on price, quantity available, thickness, the type of clothing I plan on wearing that week and how heavy my recent periods have been. Considering that I rarely get a chance to take a bathroom break at work and end up heavily engrossed in any work I am doing from home afterwards, I get the overnight ones even for daytime use. Although I try to change up my clothing colors, I stick to black bottoms for the week, more or less. I hate going to the store too many times in a week since my schedule can be unpredictable at times, so bulk buying is my vice. Of course I want more for my money in this economy. Plus, I try to monitor my diet leading up to the period date and keep track of dates so that I can cycle my spending well.
I bleed a lot during the first days, so i wear overnight pads even during the day. For the first three days, i use Tena discreet maxi night. After that, i use Tena discreet normal.
I dont choose based on price, but more on thickness and quality. Thickness, because i bleed quite a lot, and quality, because Im sensitive and react quickly to certain cheaper pads
I pick what works *with* me, not against me menstrual cup during the day, pads at night. Comfort over chaos always
Trial and error mostly. Try them and decide which you prefer.
I tested them all out and figured out what worked best for me.
I’m a tampon girl, and I don’t like anything scented.
I prefer tampons or menstrual cups.
Never heard of towels.
Pads only slip or get bunched up, sticks to the skin, or even worse, hairs. I hate them.
i use the first thing i tried cause it works for me. you too should see what works the best for you some options may be eliminated by just reading their description. try other options . you should feel comfortable with it
Try things and see what suits me. Talk to my sister and friends to see what they’ve tried and liked.
I’ve tried a bunch out and now I use different products for different flows. I also have a preference for reusable for environmental reasons. On my heaviest days I use a cup and combine with menstrual underwear as a back up. On lighter days I can get away with just menstrual underwear.
I always go with the pads. im kinda used to it
There’s also menstrual cup but abit difficult to insert.
So it really depends on your comfort and your flow!
I’ve tried pads, tampons, menstrual cups & diapers, and I still prefer pads & diapers.
As someone who is on the thicker side, I use diapers at night because i know my thick thighs will “crunch” the pad and it ends up overflowing which is so annoying!!! There are diapes just for menstruation and those for incontinence (either works well tbh)
My day 1/2 of period is usually heavy, so if I don have diapers, I use pads with at least 30-35cm length just for extra protection.
There’s pads with cooling effect – LIFE CHANGER.
And to secure it all, I would use the undies that prevent your clothes from staining.
In summary:
Comfort level + how heavy your flow is + size of your body.
Start off with pads as a tween, and go from there.

Trial and error I suppose.
I hate pads, they’re disgusting to me and I hate the feeling of blood leaking.
I like tampons but they make my cramps worse.
I love the idea of a menstrual cup but it was painful to insert for me and it leaked no matter what.
I went on birth control to stop my period because it was painful and very heavy. Now I get a period once every few months and it’s very light. I used to wear pantyliners for that but they gave me infections so now I use period underwear from ModiBodi and I love it.
You try your way forward.
My mother bought me pads as a child and I always used them. I don’t like the idea of tampons, but I have changed which pad, slightly. Always brand with wings worked well for me. I once bought the wingless by accident and I move around too much apparently, so they would detatch.
Then, 8 years ago I bought Knix reusable period underwear to try since I’m a tree hugger and haven’t gone back.
The place to start is regular pads without wings.
Do they move and it bothers you? Get the ones with wings next time.
Do you go through them too quickly? Get the super/heavy ones next time.
At nighttime do you leak out the front or back? Buy some nighttime ones and wear those overnight.
Now you should know what sort of pads you like and can experiment with brands.
If you find that you don’t like the feeling of pads try tampons and you do the same thing. Start with regular and move on from there.
I’ve always been team tampon because I hate the feeling of the blood. Sounds silly but the only way I can describe it is when I wear a pad, I feel like I’m trying to hold all the blood in.
However since becoming very sick with UC, I hardly get periods anymore, so I can usually just get away with a liner.
It’s just trial and error. Depends what more comfortable and convenient for you.
Try them to see what works best for you as an individual. There are many different types of products because many different types of people find different products work better for them.
Personally I prefer pads with wings, but something else might work better for you. Try things out and see how you feel.
Before I went on the pill for pmdd and taking it without break I used fabric pads that I’d wash out and then properly wash in the washing machine. They felt a lot better than the cheap plastic that would irritate my skin and they’re also better for nature as they don’t rlly produce waste cuz u can use them for multiple years. For days of light flow I also had period underwear that had a light pad basically sewn in tho u barely felt that part of it.
When I had my period, I would use pads at home, then the Walmart brand of the “click” tampons If I needed to be out and about or had to work.
I was exclusively a tampons girl (pads sometimes at night, but not regularly) until I got a Diva Cup. And then I never looked back.
I bought exactly one. I can’t even remember when I bought it but I do know I’ve had it for more than ten years, and I’ll likely never buy another period product again.
I keep “emergency” tampons in my car but rarely use them.

Disposable discs are an option too! You can wear them for 12 hours and unless it’s a super heavy flow day they don’t leak. Also, pads with bamboo seem more “breathable” to me.
I’ve changed to pads now after using tampons for years and it feels soooo much better. I never have an issue with them bunching or moving.
I would use a tampon if necessary but for me now pads are the way. I never buy anything scented.
It definitely is trial and error.
The first question is are you comfortable with inserting something or not. Then you ask yourself if you want to go the reusable route or disposable. Then pick from that category. There’s are a bunch of options now. I use menstrual cups and my friend uses period panties
You try each type and see which you like the most. Even the flow varies for most women over the course of a period so it’s again difficult to say what would exactly suit.
Trial and error. You get 30-40 years to experiment and figure out what works for you.
Personally, I could never get tampons to work for me. I probably just wasn’t doing it right, but I could always feel them, it was usually painful, and knowing it might not be in right, I never took the chance leaving it very long. So I went with pads, always with wings, because they really do work to keep it from leaking, otherwise the pads tend to shift or get bunched up on one side or the other. That’s just in my experience, anyway. I know there are other products available as well, but I never tried them.
I choose what i am used to.
In the first few years, i tried different types of tampons, different types of pads. Over time, i found the ones that i feel comfortable with. This never changed.
Okay, sometimes (depending on the amount of liquid and the situation) i choose a different size or a combination of pad and tampon.
I think, every woman will choose of the selection of products. Or just will take what is available.
This is timely.
Tampa’s Pearl and Always Cotton Pads. Thinx period underwear for potential blow outs or potential for spotting. These are fantastic.
The cotton absorbent pads are such a game changer if you don’t like tampons. The night pads are really long. They were great postpartum when I didn’t have as much of a warning. I’ll admit to using a diaper because I can blow thru a super tampon in 8 hours.
Found the first one I liked as a teen. Never swapped over since.
I hated pads so when I finally worked out how to put tampons in correctly I used them. Same brand and style since.
Ive been interested in testing a cup but also apprehensive.
I have a bunch of different ones at home and choose the one I feel like when I am on my period.
It’s all trial and error until you find what works.
I hate tampons because on more then one occasion, I’ve had the string break with a tampon inserted (uncomfortable to have removed at Drs) or leak or come out when not ready to change it. 😒
I find “night pads” work best for me because they are thick and I’ve always been a heavy bleeder. Normal “day pads” with or without wings are full in less than an hour for me and that makes it uncomfortable and they tend to rub against the legs when full.
Cups have the same “I want to come out when you don’t want me too” issue for me.
Again, it’s all trial and error. You need to find what works and what doesn’t work.
