  1. Gdansk is a pretty interesting city, lots of different kinds of history.

I visited the Solidarnosc centre and did a tour of the shipyard there.I remember a lot of what happened there from watching the news on TV when I was a kid.

The museum was very crowded, some foreign tourists but a lot of Poles too,I guess it’s still a very important part of their recent history.

  2. Apparently Ion Iliescu just died. Don’t know nearly enough about the guy to have an even remotely informed opinion about his legacy, but the Reddit hivemind suggests I should jubilate so…anyone for a bit of tuica?

  3. Can I trade my PhD for actual handyman-skills, so I can do stuff myself? Car battery is worn down, and really needs to be replaced. Youtube shows me it’s not that difficult, but I have two left hands, so I’m more likely to wreck stuff and be worse off. Ah well, gotta call a car mechanic to do it for me.

  4. As I mentioned before, I started using VS Studio for my regular writing, which comes with a free Copilot, so, AI assistant for writing and coding. It fixes Latex errors (or tries, bless it) but also makes auto-complete suggestions for paragraphs that I am writing. Some are quite okay, and I can at least use bits of it (I am not sure how much time it saves me, but hey, why not. It still has some novelty factor). But some are 100% bullshit 🤣 like, it even gives citation suggestions, but that citation doesn’t exist? I see stuff like \cite{Stuart2022-ij} but there is no Stuart2022 in my bibliography?? Where did you get that from 😂 Oh me oh my.

I saw in the cooking subreddit that someone’s internet friend who they never met before sent them 30 pounds of freshly caught Alaskan salmon. Which got me wondering, why have I never received gifts from any of you? You are my internet friends, and I never met any of you, so all criteria are fulfilled. Why haven’t I received 30 pounds of reindeer meat, Parmesan wheel, or whatever it is that grows in San Francisco?

We should do a Daily Chat gift exchange, but the minimum gift weight should be 30 pounds. What will you send to your fellow Redditors?

  5. Gosh, they had to put a 4 essay questions in the US government jobs website that sound suspiciously like declaring your loyalty to the president. There was one that was basically “name your favorite executive order.” I don’t see how doing this crap and having the EPA declare PFAS safe is eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse. I guess it accomplishes their goal of class liquidation of bureaucrats, academics, and intellectuals anyways. Well it wasn’t like they didn’t have a response time of like 6 months before all this crap.

On the subject of waste, fraud, and abuse, I looked up why they were investigating New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Apparently, he was traveling to Turkey suspiciously often for a NYC mayor, even meeting President Erdogan. He seemed to have been accepting free plane tickets from Turkish officials and maybe some donations from a construction company linked to a government owned bank in Turkey. The last bit reminds me of old NYC machine politics; maybe they bonded over some cherished local traditions. Regardless, Trump had the investigation dropped.
