Honest to Jesus Christ, I never realized how bad hangovers can be in your 30's. Jesus Christ, dudes. They are actually awful–even if I drink water while drinking.

Any remedies to help prevent hangovers the day before? Didn't foresee this one coming.

  1. You can drink less. It always works.
Hangovers are the most perceptible sign of aging.

  2. When I have too much alcohol, I pan-fry a large flank steak in salted butter. I then put on wet socks and go to sleep.

  3. Drink less. It’s fantastic. I had 2 day hangovers by 25 cause I was a raging alcoholic. Now a few times a year I enjoy a drink or two and life is much better.

  4. Haven’t had a hangover in 6 years. Because 6 years ago I gave up alcohol. Best decision I’ve ever made.

  5. Not sure why, but every guy in my circle essentially quit drinking around 26, we’re all 29-32 now. It might have been the hangovers. Even 2-3 beers and I feel that I have less energy the next day

  6. This is why I quit entirely.  Just wasn’t worth it anymore.

Even light drinking makes me feel bad.

  7. Right around the time I turned 30, my body developed this neat trick whereby I would become violently nauseous after three to four drinks in a single evening. Boom! No more hangovers of any sort. It does mean that getting a decent buzz on comes with other immediate and dire consequences, so YMMV.

  8. My body responds differently it seems on nights I drink more than 2 drinks. Had a massive hangover earlier this year for a Christmas party. Only drank once since and had more mixed drinks / beers instead. Was a lot more tolerable, had no hangover – felt fine within 24 hours after. I drank 2 strong scotches on the rock during the Christmas party and had a headache for days.

  9. – Buy Pedialyte
    – Take half and put it in a water bottle, fill the rest with water.
    – Shake and stash in fridge.
    – When you get home, drink half of it.
    – In the morning, finish the rest.

This is usually down to sugar intake. You are consuming too much sugar (yes, alcohol is that, not just mixers and shots). The sugar overnight consumes all the water in your body. So you are dehydrated like the desert. Stop consuming so much sugar and you’ll be better.

And as you get older, your liver processes the intake/destruction of alcohol slower.

So change what you drink, consume less, or plan these nights a bit better.

    Still gonna be hungover though…

  10. I feel like the only person in the world whos hangovers got better as I got older. When I was in my 20s, hangovers were brutal. I would be puking all throughout the next day and feeling like shit. But as I got older, hangovers became more mild, to where a hangover is just me being tired.

  11. As you age you take what your body gives you. I could put down a case of beer into my early 30s. I couldn’t do it now with a gun to my head.

  12. I’m 36 and my hangovers are no different than when I was 20! If I’m heavy drinking now I just make sure like every third or fourth pint is a water, and before bed drink as much water as I can be arsed with (usually a litre)!

  13. as i age i consume less and enjoy every beer or every shot more than when i was younger.

i was hungover 4 weeks ago, bro, i did not miss that. but until i was 27-29 i had this way to much.

here in germany electrolytes are very well known and it helps also a lot, basicly it is sugar, salt. here is the compound list: D-glucose, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, potassium chloride.

sometimes friends take one before drinking and this seems to be the master-solution, heard many good results

but i prefere not to get hungover at all.

  14. wait until you are 40’s.

I will still have a few beers, cocktails or wine with dinner. BUT I NEVER drink to excess anymore.

  15. You guys get hangovers? I chug a bunch of water before I go to bed and it works every time

  16. Just wait until you’re in your 40s…

Anyway, the best way to mitigate bad hangovers, in my extensive experience, is to drink plenty of water BEFORE bed. This is hard because it’s easy enough to drink until darkness sets in. You don’t usually detect when exactly this point arrives until you’re well past it, which makes things tricky, but you can do it by measuring carefully both time and intake. Just make sure you keep your special liter or two bottle of water nearby.

It also helps to stick to the good stuff. No well drinks. No cheap liquors. No cut-rate beers. Stay away from the sweet shit, too. Your liver processes both sugar and alcohol for your body. Hawaiian-style drinks like the pina colada and blue Hawaiian or anything that goes into a blender with syrup and ice is a hard one-two punch to the liver. Steer clear. I only drink dry, red wines nowadays. If drinking beer, nothing too hoppy like IPAs. Those are headache hangover in a can for me. If I’m drinking mixed drinks, I try to stay away from those with too many mixers. A good rule of thumb is three fingers of liquor, one of mixers, or no mixers at all. Don’t buy the pre-made shit if making margaritas. Fresh squeeze your own citrus for those and add good tequila. With a high-quality tequila and fresh-squeezed citrus, I’ve taken down a fifth in a night and woke up feeling surprisingly clean the next morning.

On the prior note: Stop. Drinking. Liquers. Sugar/Syrup + alcohol = pain.

This won’t help you to avoid the worst hangovers over your life, but treat it like an experimental stage. For example, I love red wine. Lots of it. So, I’ve found that not only is drinking a couple liters of water before bed good for you, but drinking a tall glass between every couple of drinks is also good. This is THE rule if you’re day drinking. Not only will you last the day better and be less dehydrated later, but you’ll also be more pleasant to be around (not a mess).

Finally, there’s a lot out there about “mixing” alcohols. In my experience, similar families work well together in slight moderation. For example, if I’m drinking red wine a lot, and I want to switch to something hard, I almost always switch to a cognac, which is made from twice distilled muscat grapes. Similar, and a good way to wake up without hangover. If I’ve been drinking beers all day, and I would like to shift to a higher gear, I go to whiskey or Scotch (malt). Similar buddies and mix well depending on brand. I would not, however, switch to one, then to another, then back and over a bunch of times. That’s asking for a mess to clean up.

Oh yeh, one more thing. If you binge drink like I do on the weekends, make sure you taper on your last day. This means drinking the same thing you’ve been drinking, just slower, lighter, and less of it. This will help to lessen the W/D impacts on the body as you head into the work/study week.

    You’re welcome!

P.S. If you’re here to poo-poo because you think he should “just quit now,” get off your high horse. Many of us have been struggling with it for years. Most will try and fail hard. A handful will escape. But for most of society, mitigating the effects/impacts is the best we can hope for the rest of our lives. I’m not here to yuk anybody’s yum. Just to share my wealth (35+ years) of experience.
