Poznan, Poland.16° at 7am,a bit cloudy this morning.
Görlitz was a beautiful little town, good place to wander around for a few hours. We took a couple of trains from there to start the Poland part of the trip.
My first time in Poznan. It looks pretty nice, typical Polish main square in the old town with lots of colourful buildings, churches etc.
Accommodation here is still quite a bit cheaper than in ‘Western Europe ‘, though from what I can see of food prices, they have risen quite a bit since my last time in this country.
It’s shocking how many journalists and newscasters have difficulty pronouncing American and British names.
Just this morning, one of them talked about Benedict Coomber-Batch, Lie-am Newson (Liam Neeson) and D’oh-nald Trump.
Just like when learning languages at school, it surprsises me to witness someone who must have heard the name dozens of times then pronounce the vowels wrong. Don’t they really believe what they hear, or don’t they pay attention?
Polish is a seriously difficult language;-) At least to read and to understand any vocabulary…I have never studied it, though I am on my 5th time in Poland now.
At least with Dutch, German etc.I recognise more vocabulary even if I also can’t speak them!
Anyway I am practising my few words of basic Polish and trying to learn something more as well…
I read that Japan just had its hottest ever recorded day yesterday.
There’s also a major heatwave in South Korea at the moment.
We are stuck in a loop where my mom complains daily about hot weather and I complain about cold weather. It’s like 13 degrees. But okay, it is what it is, I guess. At least it doesn’t look like it’ll improve.
I watched a documentary about Caspar David Friedrich yesterday and I am wondering if mutton chops should become popular again. I normally prefer clean-shaven men, but mutton chops look so stylish. But probably it only fits if you have the rest of the attire to go with it.
The documentary made me think of Monk by the Sea again. I wonder if that is where the evolution towards Rothko started. If you look at it, it is basically three color strips. Caspar was ahead of his time. They also showed his favorite blue pigment smalt, which is a cobalt glass. There’s a German company called Kremer which produces historical pigments (and sells many more) mainly for restorers, icon painters etc. They started their business with smalt production, and are still the only ones in the world producing it. It is very beautiful, but not lightfast, toxic, and a pain to make paint out of ([you can see it here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4rSCClo7M4)). Kremer also showed how to make ink out of cuttlefish ink (sepia), which Caspar painted with for many years before he started painting with oil.
Kremer is also where I buy my pigments. They’re really good.
I read that a volcano at the ass end of Siberia (which anyway is a very active volcano) erupted. It is probably linked to the massive earthquake that happened recently.
I wonder if there’ll be a Kaiju attack next.
I’m having to often shop in the women’s or kid’s section bcs there’s nothing available of my size in Europe. Even the people working there give me looks when I tell them my size like it’s not my fault 😭. Every time I shop there I have to cautious to not come off as some creep given the respect Indians have abroad lol. One day I said fuck it and got some pants from the men’s section but oh boy I was struggling to keep it up and just pulling my pants up the entire time I was in Milano. 🙂↕️
