Last stop in the German part of the trip today, I’m heading to Görlitz, right on the border with Poland.
This evening crossing over to Poland to continue the trip.
I like travelling in Germany, everything is pretty easy despite not really knowing any German beyond a few words.Lots to see, plenty of interesting history, monuments, art, parks etc.
The Saxon Switzerland park is really beautiful and aside from one or two specific places, it’s pretty quiet too… you can walk long trails with few other hikers.
I was just reading about the massive earthquake which thank god happened in the middle of nowhere, but now there’s Tsunami warnings all over the place. I saw some footage. It’s terrifying, but I must admit, also kind of fascinating.
People complain about kids a lot but here’s my unpopular opinion. Kids are much friendlier and polite than adults. Whenever I am on a walk or so, I always get greeted by kids, while adults are hit and miss (some don’t even reply if you greet them, they just look at you). Also, if the way is blocked for a wheelchair user or buggy, or someone needs a place in public transport the kids very quickly make space. Some adults can do with getting out of their own ass and learning from the kiddos.
The Anglism of the day: I just heard a Finnish professional athlete use a direct translation of the proverb “to get the monkey off your back”.
It sounded stupid beyond belief, as you can imagine if you’re a non-native speaker of English.
I visited the factory where they make electronic Volkswagen cars in Dresden, the ‘Transparent Factory’.The tour there is really interesting (and I’m not really into cars much,I rarely drive a car).
They also do test drives for those who want. Some of the models and prototypes are really great, incredible inside, and the production line is very interesting to see.
They have a new version of the old VW campervan which is stunning, inside and out..if you have a spare 100,000 Euros or so!
A famous former biathlete, [Laura Dahlmeier](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Dahlmeier) (Olympic and World Champion) had a serious accident while mountaineering in northern Pakistan. Her climbing partner immediately sent out a distress call, but she couldn’t be rescued yet. That was on Monday, close to 6000 m high, and they still couldn’t locate her as of this morning. It doesn’t help that they’re in a very remote area and close to the Indian border, so the only SAR units allowed to fly at all is the Pakistani military.
At least two days over 5500 m, probably severely injured, with freezing temperatures during the night, it’s hard not to think of the worst 🙁
