Women of reddit, what ruins a deli sandwich for you?

  1. Pickle.

I freaking hate pickles and the smell & flavor lingers even after you picked it off 🤮

  2. When the meat slices are not “flowered” or arranged up to allow for more air flow; when you just put slices of meat stacked up in your sub like sheets of paper – it’s the WORST! You don’t get a full flavor profile, AND you will likely have ALL of your meat fall out of the sandwich when you take a bite – it just slides right through your grip. Awful!!

  3. I hate when the ingredients aren’t evenly distributed. Or when there’s a huge chunk of meat and barely anything else. I want a nice thin layer of each ingredient in each bite. I always take my sandwiches apart to redistribute everything before I can eat it.

  4. Miracle Whip being used interchangeably with Mayo. It is NOT mayo.

Relish or any other kind of sweet pickle. Blech.

  5. Anything sweet. Especially if it’s honey-flavored. Honey is disgustingly sweet to me.

  6. I’m not a “sweet meat” person. So honey smoked anything, apples, apricots, sweet jams and sauces are out for me. Give me savory all day.

  7. Red (purple) onions. I like white and yellow, but red onions are so strong, it kinda takes over the sammich. I feel like I’m eating an onion sandwich over anything else.

  8. Pickles. You can pick them off, but everything on the sandwich will still taste like pickles.

  9. Hard bread that hurts to bite it or a too-much-meat-to-everything-else ratio (I like an unmeaty sandwich lol)

  10. Stale dry bread that cuts up the roof of my mouth. Or, when I take a bite, and everything falls out of the other end. Bad sandwich architecture.

  11. olives or condiments that include them, like tapenade.

Spicy peppers or relishes that include them.

Peppers that come out of a jar or can.

    Stinky cheese

  12. Too much meat! Please don’t give me an inch of sliced deli meats to justify charging more. I’ll take most of it off and feel guilty about the waste (money and meat.)

  13. Too much Sauce Slippage or Not Enough Bun/Bread

Sauce slipping on Slippery Ingredients that just make a sloppy sandwich mess

When the sauces Mix Together to create a gloopy mess

I often ask for an extra bun or I’ll ask for sauce on the side and add my own sauces at home.

  14. American style bbq sauce that tastes like someone put a sugar cube in my mouth and made me smell smoking tyres.
Nope nope nopity nope for me.

  15. #Really jenky bread.

You can have really expensive, nice charcuterie or some cheap, basic deli meat. Either can still be tasty if done right.

There’s an assortment of sauces and fillings, but that is all based on personal taste and doesn’t necessarily “ruin” a sandwich.

But EVERYONE can agree – bad bread ruins a sandwich!

There’s this sandwich shop here locally with great fillings and flavors. They get a really soft, airy, hoagie style bread for their sandwiches. When it’s a cold sandwich, it’s too thick and too dry. The bread to fillings ratio is wrecked. For hot sandwiches, they use a panini press. The bread is so airy and soft, it just smooshes flat. The worst part is that it doesn’t really get crispy. So now you just have a flat, soggy, soft sandwich. It blows.

It’s the same when you get those really high hydration sourdough bread slices from artisanal sandwich shops, and they slice it too thick and toast it. Like, yes, the sourdough is fantastic and rustic, but it is shredding the roof of my mouth to eat this damn sandwich. Yeeeesh.

Yeah, I have a lot of feelings about this.

  16. Too much of any condiments. I like them, but please don’t do too much 😞

  17. An uneven bite! I hate biting into a massive amount of deli meat but nothing else, instantly gives me the ick.
