In Germany, I see a lot of not only 'normal' German Euro coins (the ones with the eagle on the back) but there are also individual coins for each of our sixteen states, as well as special coins for anniversaries of specific events or so, like the fall of the wall. Whenever I see one of those special Euro coins, they're always German. Of course, I live in Germany, so I'm less likely to see other countries' coins than the German ones (though I see plenty of the 'regular' Euros from other countries).

It's probably a dumb question, but I'm just curious if you have a lot of those in your countries as well and we just don't get those here, or if Germany is just very eager to print lots of different Euro coins.

  1. One of our special commemorative euro coins had the rose from the ancient Rhodian coins on it (for the union of Greece and the Dodecanese in 1947). When I got one I decided to keep it as token and of course I lost it.

  2. Austria has 8 commemorative coins so far, one every two or three years, always for some jubilee, the last one was for 35 years Erasmus program. I also see the German coins most often. Every country can issue up to two 2€ commemorative coins per year and Germany seems to issue at least one every year in large editions.

  3. Well, first we had our Queen coins, followed by a Queen/King combo and afterwards the King coins.

Somehow we also love commemorative “X-years part of Europe!” euro coins.

And an Erasmus 2 euro coin if I’m not mistaken.

That’s about it for The Netherlands.

But goddamn, we do love to sell bullshit Dutch prototype euro’s without real value to old people for ridiculous prices.

  4. Yes, commemorative €2 coins exist in other countries. Back in Portugal I used to get French ones kind of often, as well as Portuguese ones of course. I usually kept them but I don’t know if they’re still at my parents’ place. And I do remember having the German states one for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

  5. Sure.

As example our king just celebrated his 65th birthday and they made a commemorative coin for his birthday.

    It’s particular because it’s officially worth €12,5.

We also have many commemorative coins like the 2€ atomium coin.

  6. Yes all countries do issue them. And I collect all the ones that aren’t common.

I use this app [Eurocollection – App su Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eurocollection) to catalog and check which one I already have.

For reference the one of those commemorative 2€ that has less prints that I own is the “[2200° Anniversario della morte di Tito Maccio Plauto](https://filatelianumismaticalottini.it/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/2euro-morte-plauto-600×600.jpg)” issued by Italy in 2016 (out of 1 500 000 prints).

While of the standards one I have a 2€ from San Marino issued in 2012 (out of 712 000 prints)
