American here. We hear a lot about how irrational our private health insurance structure is, compared to every other developed country. But with the recent hurricanes, and media coverage of natural disasters on home insurance, I realized that I've never heard people talk about how homes are insured in other countries.
What is it like in EU countries? Is there a common standard, or is that something that varies a lot between countries? And is insurance handled by private companies, or by national government insurers, or something in-between?
Beyond the legal structure, how does it actually work? Are home owners made whole after natural disasters, like earthquakes and floods? Are there any policy incentives (or disincentives) that prevent people or towns from rebuilding repeatedly in areas that are prone to disasters?
