In many European countries, electronic identity cards with microchips have become standard. These cards store personal data that can be accessed by computers or smartphones. The EU's eID website tracks many of these digital identity systems.

Are there also digital identity options in your country that don’t rely on a physical card?

In the Netherlands, we use DigiD, a digital identity created by the government to access a wide range of public services. With DigiD, after registering online, you can authenticate yourself using different methods: username and password (basic level), and for more sensitive services, you can use two-factor authentication (2FA), which requires both a password and a verification code sent to your phone via SMS or generated by the DigiD app. There is also a third level where you can use your identity document (ID card or passport) with the DigiD app to verify your identity for high-security services, like healthcare or tax-related matters.
