When you come across a word you do not understand, do you compare it to another language? If so, which one?

For example, if a Dutch person doesnt understand a word or sentence, they might compare it to Chinese. They'll say: 'this looks likes Chinese to me" or something along those lines. Do you guys do this too and if so, which language?
