I’m very athletic, I box, lift and run half marathons multiple times a week. However, walking a mile (1.6km) to the store and back with groceries is an unfathomable idea to me. Especially in the heat, despite living in a part of the US known for its incredible weather.

Do Europeans walk such distances normally? I would assume the grocery store would be a lot closer to the average civilian than a mile, especially considering the density of Europeans cities.
